Preparations are underway for the 29th annual Northern Rockies Folk Festival, the much anticipated summer event the Idaho Mountain Express once called “a talent-filled, 48-hour explosion of bluegrass, country, rockabilly and jazz sure to plaster your shirt to your chest and add that wind-blown look to your hair…” The family-friendly event, August 4-5, 2006, held in Hailey’s Hop Porter Park, has become a rite of summer, with picnic blankets anchored across the lawn and barefoot crowds dancing beneath the August sun. So popular is the festival that Jefferson Starship chose it to launch their 40th reunion tour in 2005. Part-time local actor Bruce Willis is known to pop in for a jam session and local favorites Micky and the Motorcars and the Kim Stocking Band are regulars on the bill. Other notables have been Asleep at the Wheel, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Elvin Bishop, Amazing Rhythm Aces, The Subdudes, Doug Dillard, and Byron Berline. Grammy winner Rodney Crowell is booked this year for August 4th. All this talent should cost a fortune, but this festival stays true to its “folksy” roots by being affordable. This year a reasonable $18 ($20 at the door) gets you entry to both days—in addition to the music and revelry, this includes food and drink booths, as well as craft booths displaying items for perusal and purchase.
